Where: Brophy Park (down by the beach and walking path) , Alexandria, MN
What: This 2 hour workshop is for puppies and dogs that are at least 12 weeks old and their guardian(s). This class focuses on teaching Suzanne Clothier’s famous Auto Check-In, which is a foundational skill for both guardian and dog alike. The Auto Check-In teaches your dog that choosing to check in with you and freely give you their attention in all situations is beneficial and something worth doing. This is different that a “look at me” or “watch me” cue because your dog is given autonomy and volition over their actions and he/she learns to choose to look to you/connect with you without any cue and because he/she wants to. The second part of the workshop teaches the skill of walking together on a loose leash. We focus on the handler’s own mechanics in handling the leash as well as how to get your furry companion to understand how rewarding it is to walk with us on a loose lead. This is different than a “heel” cue as it requires you to have a solid connection with your dog and your dog to have a solid connection with you, and also gives your dog agency and volition over his/her self to truly be with you on your adventure.
